The name "Barmbrack" …or bairín breac (speckled bread, as in speckled with fruit) is linked to the froth or "barm" leftover after fermenting beer/ale, which is mixed with fruit for the bread. Eaten all year round, it is only at Halloween that symbolic ‘items’ are added, each with a supposed fortune-telling significance for the year ahead…..a ring means you’ll get married or a coin that you’ll find riches, a thimble meant you’d be a spinster and a piece of cloth would mean poverty!!
